Silver Birch


Silver Birch Trees can offer more than foliage or fruit trees, it can grow into a medium tall stately tree that is pleasing to look at. It is hard to surpass the showy silver grey bark on the trunk of the silver birch. It is a beautifully shaped tree with rich green weeping foliage that turns golden in the autumn.

The Silver Birch has papery grey-white bark and superb naked branches for dramatic interest in the winter months. The new leafy growth is light to dark green and tends to hang from the branches in weeping fashion.

This tree tends to grow quickly and settles into maturity as a small to medium tree. It would grace any garden or small to medium back yard. It would look sensational as a feature in a well manicured garden whether it is large or small.

Deciduous tree with attractive white bark. Conical habit reaching 5-6 metres. Bright gold autumn colour. (Cool climate tree.)

Planting ideas:

  • Perfect for large avenue plantings and driveways.
  • Ideal in garden clusters of 3 or 5 trees.
  • Plant in a large hole (40cm width, 50-60cm depth).
  • Water in well and keep soil moist until tree is established.
  • Mulch tree with either wood chips or straw. This will "limit" watering and retain soil moisture for a longer period.
  • A cool climate tree.
  • Prefers a shady position.
  • Intolerant of hot summer wind exposure.
  • Plant in well drained and well worked soil.

This wonderful tree should not be over looked it truly is a beauty.

Your local nursery will be able to give you excellent planting advice for this tree, but it tends to be quite hardy and will be a show piece in your garden for many years.
