Morton Bay Fig
Morton Bay Fig is a tree of magnitude and stands with great dignity. As this is an absolutely huge tree when it is fully grown you must ensure your backyard is of a large size as well to accommodate this fabulous tree. The Morton Bay Figs an evergreen dense tree and on maturity has a buttressed trunk that has to be seen to be believed!
This mountainous tree has oval shaped leaves which can measure approximately 25 centre metres long, are very leathery to touch, glossy and are a very deep green in colour. This tree grows to a height of thirty metres and almost the same in width.
This tree is listed in the California Registry of Big Trees as one of the champion trees of the state.
In the summer they produce rounded edible purple fruit and you can make wonderful tasting jam. I have only ever seen one Morton Bay Fig in my life (they are scarce as hens teeth!)
It was truly a magnificent specimen it stood tall with a broad canopy and had been heritage listed many years ago. It was planted by the Governor of Victoria in 1873. It still stands regal and proud after 136 years! It stands at the entrance of a beautiful double story heritage listed home; I am guessing it could tell some great stories!
There have been many a charity function held beneath it and many brides and grooms married there also. Just remember you will need a very large yard to accommodate this wonderful tree.
The botanical name for the Fig, Morton Bay is: Ficus Macrophylla.
