Jacaranda Mimosifolia
Jacaranda Mimosifolia is a fast growing deciduous (meaning they drop their leaves in the winter time) tree with fern like bright green foliage.
Unlike other deciduous trees tho which usually shed their leaves in the winter, this tree sheds its leaves in early spring, before producing a beautiful show of mauve to lilac flowers. Jacaranda is an absolute delight to the eye; it is a tree that you won't drive past when it is out in bloom without taking notice of it! The tree stands about 15 metres high and can grow to about 15 metres in width. So this tree is suitable for your backyard only if your sitting on a bit of acrage.
You will see them in many gardens; their gorgeous colour attracts the eye of gardeners of all ages. They require well drained, fertile soil and full light.
Potted specimens should be pruned hard in late winter. Propagate by seed in the spring or by cuttings in the summer.
I have driven thru country towns that have streets lined with Jacaranda Mimosifolia and it is an amazing sight to behold, they are just gorgeous, and would be a wonderful addition to any garden.
The botanical name for the Jacaranda Mimosifolia is: Bignoniaceae.
