Home Smoke Detectors

Home Smoke Detectors are a must in the home today; in most cities they are mandatory in all newly built homes. For a small cost why wouldn't you install them? I guess the question we all must ask ourselves is, what price do we put on our lives let alone our family and loved ones?

Home Smoke Detectors don't have to be a big deal or a big expense. They are readily available at most shopping outlets these days, from supermarkets to variety shops to hardware supplies. I have seen them as cheap as $5.00 each plus a couple of dollars for a battery and you're ready to go! You don't even have to be a do it yourself handy man, smoke detectors are easy to install, they usually come with double sided tape, so it is a matter of putting the battery in and sticking it up! Remember, they are better put up on the ceilings of rooms rather than on the wall, most fires start in the ceiling or from electrical faults and smoke goes straight up to the ceiling.

My husband is a jack of all trades and will have a go at anything, and the fact that I am fearful of house fires (I won't & have never had electric blankets in the house for fear of them catching alight), he decided to install home smoke detectors that are connected to power with a battery backup. This was not all that expensive and my hubby saved money by installing it himself! We have a 30 square home and he had it installed in a weekend!

Most people are aware that for some reason cooking toast sets off Home Smoke Detectors, and I go into homes that have their detector hanging from the ceiling with the battery out of it purely because the cooking of toast sets it off! Well there is such a detector as a heat sensor, this does not pick up smoke but is set off by heat. I have one of these in my kitchen and its great and again it was not expensive but well worth the out lay for peace of mind and if the kids burn the toast then it's no problem!

There are more expensive Home Smoke Detector systems that are hard wired back to the Home Security System (if you have one) that can be monitored by a security firm that would contact the fire brigade in your area as soon as there is a problem.

It is worth noting that it is a good idea to have a couple of working fire extinguishers in your home where you can put your hands on them in an emergency.
